The Healthy Church (Part 3)

Jesus shows us attributes of a healthy church- Forgiveness…

Luke 17:1-10
Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come. 2It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. 3So watch yourselves. “If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. 4Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”

Part three of our series brings another attribute for having a healthy church. The third principle found here is that of forgiveness. This speaks to the heart of God and his forgiveness toward us. God demonstrates His forgiveness to us, as we need to forgive others. We must have the same forgiving heart that God exemplifies in our lives every day. The realization that we are imperfect and need God’s forgiveness helps us with our relationships. Having that perfect example of God forgiving us teaches us to do the same. In mimicking God in this characteristic, we do not become a stumbling block for others and for ourselves.

Trying to do this of our own accord is quite difficult. This is why Jesus calls for us to turn to Him. Seeking Him brings us to the place where we can exercise forgiveness for others. In drawing close to Him, we grow and thereby help us to grow our relationships with others. The best example of how we are to treat others is found by looking to do as Jesus showed us while on this earth, and following His teachings.
